The College of Communication’s “Digital Communication and Humanities Arts” rural revitalization service took place in early July, with visits to New Taipei City’s Wulai District, Penghu County’s Xiyu Township, Taitung County’s Jinfen Township’s Paiwan Village, and Kinmen County’s Jinhu Township. These workshops focused on internet security and cultural creative industries, helping children in rural areas and caring for local development by collecting cultural stories and telling local tales.

Qin Chun-Le, a first- and second-year student from the College of Communication, participated in this initiative. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was unable to return to Malaysia during the summer break. She shared that the experience of serving children in rural and island areas made her deeply appreciate Taiwan's diverse cultural characteristics.
Professor Huang Wei-Wei, instructor of the “Digital Communication and Humanities Arts” course, emphasized that through executing the rural K-12 humanities and technology literacy USR program, faculty and students collaborated with the Digital Culture Action Research Lab and the White Ribbon Concern Association volunteers, providing creative teaching services in rural areas. This experience allowed them to learn about and experience unique local cultures while accompanying children from various parts of Taiwan in practicing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
At Xinxing Elementary School in Taitung’s Paiwan Village, Principal Huang Chao-Yuan and Director Du Wen-Xiang both agreed that the Paiwan tribe’s cultural symbols and memories—such as music, woodcraft, sculpture, and glass ornaments—are embedded in the daily lives of the students, who are eager to share and express these stories.
Jinhu Elementary School’s campus was damaged by a typhoon four years ago and was rebuilt a year ago. Principal Chen Wei-Xin said that from kindergarten to elementary school, teachers integrate the ecological changes in the campus environment into the natural, social, and art curriculum. The internet security and cultural creative workshop held by the NCCU team integrated digital literacy with local cultural revitalization, cultivating students’ digital cultural aesthetics from a technology media perspective.
After the workshop, it will be held again in Dapinglin and Banqiao. On August 7, dance therapist Zhao Zhi-Heng from the UK will conduct a “Dance Therapy” workshop. For more information, please visit the White Ribbon Concern Association’s official website.
